HISTORY: More Than Just A Past

What’s the deal with history? Why do we have to sit for hours and read countless pages of words upon words? Well, think about it this way, History is basically like the scrapbook of memories you made in elementary school. It’s filled to the brim with stories, adventures, and lessons of the past. It’s all about recording and remembering what people did, the events that went down, and how things used to be.

However, it’s not just a boring list of facts and dates — although there’s some of that too. History is a way for us to understand where we’ve been as a nation, why things are the way they are now, and a way for us to not make the same mistake twice. In the case of Philippine History, it is a treasure trove of diverse tales that define who we are as Filipinos — who we are as children of our dearest nation.

The Relevance of Philippine History in the Present

Now with the emergence of new knowledge and the constant rise of technology, why should we bother with our past? Understanding our past is kind of like having a roadmap for the present, guiding us through the twists and turns of life. It helps us make sense of the current state of affairs — may it be the good, the bad, and the complex. Our history explains why things are the way they are, from our colorful culture and traditions to our ever-so-bumpy political landscape. It’s like having a backstory for a character in a movie — you understand why they do what they do.

For instance, our ancestors’ struggles for independence and justice are the building blocks of our modern ideals. The battle against colonialism and dictatorship isn’t something that just happened in the past, it’s part of what makes us who we are as a person today.

Teodoro Agoncillo

Filipino Historian

“History is the study of the relevant past. It is the struggle of Filipino people for freedom.”

Ambeth Ocampo

Filipino Historian

“Philippine history is not about random facts, but an engaging narrative that teaches students rather how to gather and use facts for chronology, causation, critical thinking, and reflection.”

Renato Constantino

Filipino Historian

“History is the recorded struggle of people for ever increasing freedom and for newer and higher realization of human person.”

The Significance of Preserving Philippine History

Philippine history is like a family album filled with deep-rooted memories. If we end up losing it, we lose a part of who we are as a nation. In the same sense, preserving it is like preserving our identity — it’s a way of saying, “Hey, this is where we come from and it’s pretty radical.”

However, it’s not just about nostalgia; it’s about passing on our torch of identity, values, and experiences to future generations. Our history isn’t just about battles and politics, it’s also about the music, the dances, the literature, the food — all the things that make us uniquely Filipino. Preserving it ensures that our descendants can savor the same cultural richness that we did and raise the Filipino flag loud and proud.

In a nutshell, preserving our history is about holding on to our roots, learning from the past, celebrating our culture, and ensuring that our story continues for generations to come. It is quite literally like taking care of a priceless treasure, and who wouldn’t want to do that?
